The Antigua chapter of Rotary International, under the leadership of new president Juan Antonio Meza, is introducing new members.
The Antigua chapter was instrumental in establishing the first children’s surgery hospital, back in the 1950, to correct cleft palate deformities. More recently, the Antigua chapter has provided $20,000 to HELPS, an NGO, to install efficient, clean burning wood stoves in indigenous communities. Not only does the use of firewood for cooking contribute to deforestation, the fumes cause numerous health problems. The new stoves use a fraction of the wood and include proper vents to eliminate harmful fumes in the home. To find out more, please come to Rotary meetings at 8pm Wednesdays at Hotel Antigua; email Juan Antonio at mezarez@intelnett.com or call Jesus Mora B at 832-5718.
